For railfans, train lovers, history buffs, and Grand Canyon enthusiasts a sad day has dawned. Effective as of last month, September, the Grand Canyon Railways, which operates daily train service between Williams and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, will only be using diesel locomotives to power the trains. This will be the first time since the rebirth of the historic line that steam service will not be offered at any time during the year. Citing concern for the environment and reducing costs, Xanterra, the owner of Grand Canyon Railway since 2007, said that removing the steam locomotives will save 113,000 gallons of fuel oil and 151,200 ga

The Grand Canyon Railway has eliminated its steam service to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. This was their last season on the line, and the locomotives (29 and 4960) are going to be on display at the Williams depot. I think this is terribly sad, a low day in the history of railroad preservation in the southwest.
